It arrives in our support tickets a few times a week, and it always reads roughly the same: “I used a VPN, I cleared everything, I made a new account, and it banned me again straight away.” That sequence isn’t bad luck and it isn’t some unbeatable hardware ban. It’s a browser fingerprint. The one identifier on the list that none of those three steps touches. Here’s what it’s made of, why your browser version sits inside it, and why the person who shares your PC can get you banned without ever going near your account.
The pattern, and why it feels impossible
Almost everyone works through the same three fixes in the same order, because they’re the three that are easy to reach:
- Clear cookies, or open a private window. Nothing changes.
- Turn on a VPN. Sometimes it works for a minute, then the ban is back.
- Make a new account. Banned again, often before the first conversation ends.
At that point most people conclude the ban is attached to their computer and give up. That conclusion is half right, and the half that’s wrong is the useful half. It isn’t attached to a serial number burned into your motherboard. It’s attached to a description of your setup that your browser volunteers to every website it loads, and descriptions can be changed.
What a browser fingerprint actually is
A fingerprint is not a file, a cookie or an account. It’s a profile assembled on the fly from things your browser tells any site that asks: none of them identifying on their own, all of them fairly stable, and startlingly specific in combination. The usual ingredients:
- User-agent and client hints. Your browser, its major version, your operating system and platform.
- Graphics chip. The WebGL renderer string names your GPU model almost verbatim.
- Canvas and audio rendering. The site draws a test image or processes a short audio buffer and reads the result back. Different GPU, driver and font stack, subtly different pixels and floating-point output.
- Installed fonts. Which of a few hundred common typefaces your machine can render.
- Screen geometry. Resolution, colour depth, available height once the taskbar is subtracted, device pixel ratio.
- Hardware counters. CPU core count and the device-memory bucket your machine reports.
- Locale. Timezone offset and your ordered list of preferred languages.
- Media devices. How many cameras and microphones the system exposes. On a video chat site this one is right there in the normal flow of the page.
Individually these are boring. Together they routinely single out one browser on one machine among millions. Which is exactly why moderation systems reach for them. Your browser version is part of it, and your browser changes it for you
This is the detail that turns a successful unban into a mystery re-ban four days later, and it’s the one almost nobody writes about.
The browser version is one of the loudest components of a fingerprint. It’s in the user-agent, it’s in the client hints sent with every request, and it changes which features a site can detect. So downgrading your browser to an older build genuinely moves your fingerprint. That’s a real, working technique, and it’s the second path in our unban guide.
The catch is that Chromium browsers update themselves. Silently, in the background, with no prompt and no visible sign that anything happened. Install an older build and launch it, and within seconds it has already checked for an update; give it a day or two and it is back on the current version: the exact version the ban was recorded against. Your fingerprint snaps back to what it was, and the ban returns with no apparent cause.

Those pages only report.So if you downgrade, you have to freeze updates as a deliberate step, before the first launch, in all three places the updater lives: its scheduled tasks, its Windows services and the machine-wide update policy. One caveat we’d rather state than bury: an old browser is missing security patches, and that’s a genuine cost rather than a formality. Keep it for Ome.tv and run your email, banking and shopping on a current, normally-updating browser.
Why someone else on your PC can get you banned
This is the part that catches people who genuinely did nothing, and it follows directly from the ingredient list above. Look at how much of a fingerprint is the machine rather than the person using it:
- Same PC model → same graphics chip, same WebGL renderer string, same canvas output.
- Same install → same font set, same screen geometry, same core count, same reported memory.
- Same household → same timezone, same language list, same IP address.
- Same browser on the same update channel → same version number, on the same day, for both of you.
Two people sharing one computer produce fingerprints that look close to identical from the outside. A separate Windows user account doesn’t help. That changes which folder your profile lives in, not what the browser reports about the hardware. So a ban earned by your brother, your flatmate or whoever owned the PC before you can land squarely on you, and nothing you personally did explains it.
How long does an Ome.tv ban last?
Ome.tv doesn’t publish its policy, so anyone quoting exact durations is guessing. From the pattern people report to us, there are two broad shapes:
- Automatic, temporary blocks. Often shown with a countdown or a “try again later”. Minutes to a few hours, occasionally a day. These expire on their own and nothing you do speeds them up.
- Bans with no timer. These don’t expire on a schedule. Waiting doesn’t clear them, which is what the rest of this article is about.
The practical advice is boring but it saves people a lot of effort: if there’s a countdown on screen, wait. Burning a freshly made account on a ban that would have lifted by itself in ninety minutes is the most common wasted afternoon we see. Does a VPN unban you?
On its own, almost never, and that’s worth understanding rather than just accepting, because the VPN is the first thing nearly everyone tries.
A ban leans on three signals: fingerprint, account, IP. A VPN changes the third and weakest one. It’s the weakest because an IP is shared by everyone on a connection, changes on its own when a provider feels like it, and gets recycled between customers constantly, a moderation system that leaned on it heavily would ban thousands of innocent people a week.
Where a VPN does earn its place is last, after the fingerprint and the account are already sorted, and only if the ban is still there. What actually clears it
The short version, in the order that matters:
- Change the fingerprint. Either move to a Chromium browser you have never used on Ome.tv, or reinstall your current one on an older version, and freeze its automatic updates before the first launch, or it will undo itself.
- Change the account. A genuinely new Google, Facebook or VK account, not the same one with a new password. We wrote up how to make a fresh Google account without a phone number separately.
- Change the IP, only if it is still needed. Router restart, phone hotspot, or a VPN as a last resort.
Each step has details that decide whether it works: turning sync off first, declining the import prompt, deleting the profile folder the uninstaller leaves behind, and the three separate places the updater has to be switched off. The bottom line
A re-ban a minute after a “fix” isn’t evidence that Ome.tv has some unbeatable hardware lock. It’s evidence that you changed the second and third signals and left the first one alone. The fingerprint is the strongest of the three, it survives everything people normally reach for, and your browser version is part of it. Which is why the fix has to include stopping your browser from quietly putting that version back.
One closing note we’d rather say plainly: none of this changes what happens on camera. Bans overwhelmingly follow reports from real people, and reports find a new fingerprint and a new account within a day.
