What an IP lookup returns
Five fields, one database read. No tracking, no contact with the other side.
- Country and city
Every public IP belongs to a block allocated to a provider in a known place. Country is near-certain, city is a solid estimate, more on accuracy below.
- ISP and network owner
The company the block is registered to: a residential ISP, a mobile carrier or a hosting company. This one field separates real people from datacenter traffic.
- Connection type
Residential broadband, mobile data or datacenter. Useful context before you trust anything else the connection tells you.
- VPN and proxy flags
Commercial VPN ranges, proxies and Tor exits are well catalogued. If the IP belongs to one, the lookup says so instead of pretending it's a home in Amsterdam.
- What it does not return
A street address or a name. IP to location stops at the city level, any tool promising more is selling something.
How IP to location works
No GPS involved. It's allocation records, infrastructure data and constant correction.
There is no GPS chip inside an IP address. The mapping is pure bookkeeping: regional internet registries (RIPE, ARIN and friends) record which provider owns every address block, and that alone pins the country with near-perfect reliability.
City-level precision comes from the providers themselves. Where a block is routed, where the infrastructure physically sits, cross-checked against latency measurements and confirmed sightings. Geolocation databases stitch all of it together and update constantly, which is why the same IP can resolve to a neighbouring town a month later.
It also means a lookup is a database read, not a trace. It takes milliseconds, and nothing is ever sent to the IP being looked up, the person on the other end cannot tell it happened.
How accurate is IP to city?
Honest numbers. Accuracy depends entirely on what kind of network the IP sits on.
- Country~99% reliable
Allocation records make country-level lookup boringly reliable. If it says Poland, it's Poland.
- City: residential broadbandUsually right
Cable and fiber lines rarely move, so the data stays fresh. Expect the right city or one town over.
- City: mobile carriersTake with salt
Phones share carrier gateways (CGNAT), so the lookup often shows the gateway's city rather than the user's.
- VPNs and datacentersServer, not person
You get the exact location of the server. Which is precisely why the VPN flag matters more than the city in those cases.
Why VPN detection ships with every lookup
A location is only useful if the connection is what it claims to be.
Once you know the network owner, most VPNs out themselves: commercial VPN ranges are registered to hosting companies, not residential ISPs. A "home user" connecting from a datacenter block in Frankfurt is not a home user.
