When Ome.tv cannot see your camera, the site itself is rarely the problem. Your camera passes three gates before a stranger sees you: your operating system, your browser and the page, and one of them is closed. Work down this list in order. The first two fixes cover most cases.
Key takeaways
- “You have denied access to your devices” means the browser remembered a Block for ome.tv. Allow the camera in the site settings and reload.
- If that is not it, quit apps that hold the camera, such as Discord, Zoom, Teams or OBS, and make sure the browser picked your real webcam.
- Windows and macOS each have a camera privacy switch for apps. With no webcam at all, your phone can be the camera.
“You have denied access to your devices”: the browser was told no
The first time a site asks for your camera, the browser shows a small prompt. Dismiss it or press Block and the browser remembers that answer for the site, silently, on every visit after. The page then has nothing to send, however many times you reload it. This is what Ome.tv means by you have denied access to your devices (in German, “Zugriff auf Geräte verweigert”), and the usual reason behind your camera is not activated.
- Open ome.tv and click the icon at the left end of the address bar.
- Set Camera to Allow, and Microphone too.
- Reload the page. A changed permission only applies to a fresh load.
If Camera is not in that menu, open chrome://settings/content/camera (edge://settings/content/camera in Edge). Check that ome.tv is not on the blocked list, and that the camera chosen at the top is the one you actually use.
Another app is holding the camera
On Windows especially, a webcam is often available to one program at a time. Discord, Zoom, Teams, OBS and the Camera app all take it, and some keep it while they sit in the tray. Quit them fully, including from the tray, then reload ome.tv. A video call open in another browser tab counts as well.
The browser picked the wrong camera
Docking stations, capture cards and virtual cameras (OBS, NVIDIA Broadcast, old Snap Camera installs) all register as cameras, and the browser may be choosing one that shows nothing. Pick your real webcam on the settings page from the first fix, then reload.
Your operating system blocks the browser
- Windows 10 and 11: Settings, Privacy & security (just Privacy on Windows 10), Camera. Turn on camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera. Browsers count as desktop apps.
- macOS: System Settings (System Preferences on older versions), Privacy & Security, Camera, and switch your browser on. macOS asks you to quit and reopen the browser afterwards.
- A shutter or a key. Many laptops have a sliding cover or a function key that cuts the camera. A black picture with the camera light off is usually this.
A word on OBS and virtual cameras
The workaround most videos suggest is routing everything through OBS Virtual Camera. It works. It is also the setup bots use to play recordings, and a still image or a loop through a virtual camera is a common way to get flagged. What reads as bot-like is covered in why Ome.tv bans people.
No webcam on the PC? Use your phone
If the computer has no camera, or a bad one, your phone can be the camera for Ome.tv in the browser. OME Link turns your own phone into your Ome.tv camera, and its microphone too if you want it. The extension shows a code, the phone scans it and opens a page in its own browser, so nothing is installed on the phone. It is free on every account. It is part of our extension, which runs on a desktop or laptop in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi.
The other route is Ome.tv’s own phone app, which uses the phone camera directly. Our extension does not run there: phone browsers do not load extensions.
Still nothing
Try the camera somewhere else you trust, such as a Discord or Google Meet test call. If it fails there too, the problem is the machine and the fixes above are the whole list. If it works everywhere except Ome.tv, clear the site data for ome.tv (same address-bar menu, Site settings, Clear data), sign in again and allow the camera when asked. If the camera is fine and Ome.tv itself will not load or connect, check the site in this order.
