A scary clip where your face was, a scream they hear through their speakers, or both at once. How the tutorials build it with OBS, and how to do it with one key.

A jumpscare on Ome.tv is a calm conversation interrupted by something sudden: a scary face where your camera was, a scream through their speakers, or both at once. The tutorials build it with OBS and a virtual audio cable. It can be one key instead.

Key takeaways

  • A good jumpscare is short and sudden after a calm moment, and the sound does most of the work.
  • OBS can do it with a virtual camera and a virtual audio cable, but it takes a second program and good timing.
  • Our extension’s soundboard plays your own sounds into the call for free. Sending a video clip as your camera needs VIP.

What actually lands

  • Short. Two to five seconds. Longer and they have already reached for next.
  • Sudden after calm. The joke is the contrast, so talk normally first.
  • A friend helps. A second person who stays calm in the picture makes the calm part believable. Here are three ways to duo on Ome.tv, including friends in other rooms.
  • Sound does most of the work. A scream with no picture still lands; a scary picture in silence often does not.

The OBS way

For the picture: add the clip to an OBS scene, start Virtual Camera and choose it as the camera in your browser. For the sound, the stranger only hears what goes into your microphone, so the clip’s audio has to be routed there with a virtual audio cable. Then switch scenes at the right moment in a second program.

It works, and it is fiddly, and every call now runs through a virtual camera, which is also what bot accounts use (how Ome.tv bots behave).

The one-key way

  • The sound, free. The soundboard in our extension holds eight sounds of your own, up to a minute each, on Alt+1 to Alt+8. They go into the call, so the stranger hears them, and they play even while your microphone is muted. You hear them too, so you know it fired.
  • The picture, with VIP. Pick your clip as the Video file camera input, and it goes out instead of your webcam when you switch to it. Alt+Y steps to the next input that has a file behind it. More in what a stranger can see instead of you.
  • Both. Switch to the clip and hit the scream on the same beat.

No OBS, no audio cable and no virtual camera: both happen inside the call. The camera input goes back to your own camera whenever the page reloads.

Keep it a joke

  • Mind the volume. They may be wearing headphones. Loud enough to startle, not loud enough to hurt.
  • Skip anyone who looks young. A scare that is funny to an adult is not funny to a child.
  • Blur faces before you post a reaction anywhere. They did not agree to be in your video.

The short version

A jumpscare is a short, sudden clip, a sound, or both. OBS can do it with a virtual camera and an audio cable; the extension does it with a key, the sound part free. It runs on a desktop or laptop in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, and setup is a Discord sign-in and about two minutes.

Try it on your own Ome.tv

The OME.UNDFND extension shows the country, city and provider of every connection, right on the page. Free to start, and setup takes about two minutes.
